McCormick played junior hockey in the Western Hockey League with the Kamloops Blazers and Lethbridge Hurricanes, and also in the British Columbia Hockey League with the Cowichan Valley Capitals.

McCormick attended the University of Massachusetts Lowell[1] where he played three seasons (1999 – 2002) of NCAA hockey in the Hockey East Association with the UMass Lowell River Hawks, where during the 2001-02 season he established school records by playing 209:25 minutes without allowing a goal (surpassing the old school record of 177:08 set by Dana Demole), and for registering the most shutouts in a single season with six.[2]

McCormick went on to play three seasons in the professional ranks before retiring in 2005.
